Fast Cars, Rooftop Skies & Unapologetic Romance: Simone & Veto’s Biloxi Engagement Editorial

A cinematic Biloxi engagement featuring the historic courthouse, the Beau Rivage rooftop, and an unforgettable trio of statement vehicles.

Rooftop Sunset: The classic red old-school car against the open coastal sky atop the Beau Rivage garage.

When an engagement session breaks free from conventional posing and leans into a couple’s authentic passions, it stops feeling like a standard photoshoot and starts feeling like an editorial film.

For Simone and Veto, their Biloxi engagement session was all about energy, texture, and celebrating their bond with serious style. We mapped out an itinerary bridging historic southern grandeur with modern cinematic grit—starting at the iconic Biloxi Courthouse and climbing to the top deck of the Beau Rivage parking garage for sunset.

Adding horsepower to their vision, the shoot incorporated three incredible vehicles: a crisp white Ford Mustang, a sleek white motorcycle, and a jaw-dropping classic old-school red car that took center stage on the rooftop.

Act I: Neoclassical Romance at the Biloxi Courthouse

We began downtown along the steps of the historic Biloxi Courthouse. The neoclassical stone columns and historic architectural lines gave the session an immediate sense of permanence and classic southern elegance.

Surrounded by the grand limestone architecture, Simone and Veto shared quiet, intimate moments on the steps. The soft, natural afternoon light highlighted their formal styling, grounding the session in timeless sophistication before the high-energy automotive scenes began.

Act II: The White Mustang & Motorcycle Edge

Shifting gears into modern editorial street style, we brought out the white Ford Mustang and the matching white motorcycle.

The crisp monochrome white-on-white aesthetic gave these frames a bold, contemporary magazine feel. From candid, windblown moments seated on the motorcycle to dynamic editorial portraits framed by the aggressive lines of the Mustang, every shot carried speed, swagger, and confidence.

Modern Edge: High-speed style with the white Mustang and motorcycle.

Act III: Sunset & The Classic Red Car atop the Beau Rivage

To close out the evening, we ascended to the top deck of the Beau Rivage parking garage. Rooftop locations in Biloxi offer an unbeatable combination of panoramic Gulf views, industrial concrete textures, and clean, clutter-free horizons.

This is where the classic old-school red car made its grand entrance. Its rich crimson paint and polished chrome trim popped dramatically against the open sky and sunset horizon. Bathed in golden hour transitioning into deep blue hour, Simone and Veto leaned into the vintage aesthetic—creating an unforgettable finale overlooking the Biloxi coast.

From Giveaway Winner to High-Fashion Cowgirl: Sharon’s Birthday Editorial

A bold fusion of rustic western authenticity, couture evening wear, and unapologetic birthday confidence.

The Vision Realized: Floor-length black couture, sweeping puffy sleeves, and southern sunset skies.

When community connection, a little bit of luck, and a bold creative vision collide, magic happens behind the lens.

Earlier this year at Kerri Paul’s community fitness walk, we set up a giveaway for a complimentary portrait session. Entrants simply had to drop their information with us and connect on social media. Among all the entries, Sharon was randomly selected as our winner.

When we hopped on our creative consultation call to discuss what she wanted to create, she made it clear that a generic studio backdrop was off the table. Instead, she shared a dream she had held onto for her upcoming birthday: a high-fashion cowgirl editorial.

Bringing an ambitious concept like this to life takes intentional planning, styling cohesion, and the right environment. Here is how Sharon’s milestone vision came together—and a look behind the lens at the details that made this shoot so unforgettable.

Bringing the Vision Together: The Creative Process

A high-concept photoshoot succeeds or fails in the pre-planning phase. Pairing a couture evening gown with a rustic countryside setting could easily clash if color harmony, lighting, and textures aren't deliberately aligned:

  • Defining the Aesthetic Tension: Rather than going purely traditional western, Sharon wanted drama. We anchored the session on high-contrast visual storytelling—pairing voluminous black evening fabric and glam styling against rugged, weathered farm textures.
  • Scouting the Backdrop: We chose an authentic rural property complete with open pastures, natural tree-line diffusion, and a vintage dark-red horse trailer that provided an incredible rustic backdrop.
  • Timing for Golden Hour: Working outdoors with a horse requires patience and optimal light. Scheduling around the late afternoon allowed warm rim lighting to contour Sharon’s silhouette and separate the dark gown from the background foliage.

Bold red lips, radiant skin, and the classic wide-brimmed hat—elevating western styling to red-carpet glamour.

Behind the Lens: Breaking Down the Visuals

1. The Statement Wardrobe

Sharon’s dress served as the architectural anchor of the shoot. Featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline, corset-inspired bodice, a dramatic thigh-high slit, and oversized puffy sleeves, the gown brought immense movement and presence to an open field. She grounded the look with mid-calf brown suede cowboy boots and a structured black hat.

Poise and connection: Standing alongside the sleek bay horse in full western leather tack.

2. Authentic Props & Country Attitude

Props only work when they feel natural to the subject. The sleek dark bay horse brought a serene, stately energy to the formal frames. But for the playful, celebratory side of a birthday shoot, Sharon leaned against the vintage burgundy trailer, propped a boot on an antique galvanized wash tub, and held a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7. It brought grit, celebration, and genuine personality into the gallery.

Editorial edge: Weathered red metal, antique galvanized steel, and a toast to another great year.

3. Lighting, Color & High-Contrast Monochrome

In the color frames, we embraced the rich, deep tones—crimson red from the trailer, vibrant pasture green, and warm skin tones against deep black fabric. For select images, stripping the color away into high-contrast black-and-white brought out the sculptural curves of the sleeves and the timeless lines of the western silhouette.

Whether your dream shoot is high-fashion in an open pasture, moody in a historic lounge, or timeless in the heart of the city, we collaborate with you on every detail—from color palettes and styling to location scouting and heirloom wall art.

Behind the Lens: Why Eloping Might Just Be Your Best Decision https://www.grayfishphotography.com/blog/2026/9/behind-the-lens-why-eloping-might-just-be-your-best-decision Behind the Lens: Why Eloping Might Just Be Your Best Decision (From a Wedding Photographer)

Look, I’ll be the first to admit it: big, traditional weddings are some of the greatest events on earth.

As a wedding photographer, I get a front-row seat to the magic. There is an undeniable, electric energy in a room packed with 150 of your favorite people. Watching your grandma tear up the dance floor, capturing that massive group photo where everyone is laughing, and experiencing the pure spectacle of a grand reception—it’s unmatched. If you want to throw the ultimate party of your life, a traditional wedding is hands-down the best way to do it.

But lately, I’ve been capturing a different kind of magic.

Elopements have evolved far beyond the old cliché of running off to a courthouse in secret. Today, eloping is a conscious, deeply intentional choice. As you look through the images below from a recent shoot I did right here in the historic French Quarter, you’ll see exactly what I mean.

1. Absolute Freedom of Location (A Photographer’s Dream)

When you have a 200-person guest list, you are limited to traditional venues that can hold that capacity. But when it’s just the two of you? The entire world—or in this case, the most romantic neighborhood in New Orleans—becomes your venue.

Instead of being confined to a single reception hall, an elopement allows us to treat the city like our personal canvas.

Imagine your wedding day looking like this:

  • Exchanging vows tucked away in the moody, historic shade of Pirate’s Alley.

  • Strolling hand-in-hand past the iconic wrought-iron balconies and hanging ferns of Royal Street.

  • Capturing epic, cinematic portraits with the grand architecture of Jackson Square as your backdrop.

From a photography perspective, this is pure gold. We aren't rushed by venue coordinators or restricted by strict timelines. We can chase the perfect golden hour light as it hits the historic brick, wait for a street jazz band to play a song just for you, and capture photos that feel entirely alive.

2. Ditching the Stress for Authenticity

Traditional weddings are wonderful, but they come with a lot of moving parts. Timelines, seating charts, catering logistics, and making sure you greet every single aunt and second cousin can take a mental toll.

An elopement strips away the performance and brings the focus entirely back to the two of you.

  • No Stage Fright: If reading deeply personal vows in front of a crowd feels terrifying, an elopement gives you the privacy to cry, laugh, and speak from the heart without an audience.

  • Your Day, Your Pace: Want to pause your wedding day to grab a celebratory Sazerac at a historic bar? Want to laugh your way through getting powdered sugar all over your wedding attire while eating mid-day beignets at Café du Monde? You can. There is no crowd waiting for you to cut a cake.

3. Reallocating Your Budget for Experiences

Let’s be real: traditional weddings are a massive financial investment. When you elope, your budget shifts from paying for things (like chair rentals, linens, and feeding a crowd) to investing in unforgettable experiences.

Couples who elope in places like the French Quarter find they can easily afford the luxuries that truly matter to them:

The Bottom Line: There is No Wrong Choice

Whether you choose a grand ballroom packed with everyone you’ve ever met, or a quiet, romantic street corner in New Orleans with just the two of you, the "best" wedding is simply the one that feels most like you.

Big weddings are an absolute blast, and I will always love shooting them. But if you want a day focused entirely on intimacy, style, culture, and zero stress, do not hesitate to break the mold. Elope. It might just be the greatest adventure you ever take.

Celebrating in Color & Style: Chasity’s 45th Birthday Session at Luna Tequila https://www.grayfishphotography.com/blog/2026/9/celebrating-in-color-style-chasity-s-45th-birthday-session-at-luna-tequila Celebrating 45 in Saturated Style: Behind the Lens of Chasity’s Milestone Session at Luna Tequila

There is something extraordinary about a milestone birthday session. Turning 45 isn't just about marking another year on the calendar—it's a celebration of confidence, wisdom, self-love, and stepping fully into your own light. When Chasity reached out to plan her birthday shoot, we knew immediately that standard studio backdrops wouldn't do justice to the vibe she wanted to bring. She wanted something bold, sultry, saturated with color, and above all, genuinely celebratory.

We chose Luna Tequila, an upscale tequila bar and lounge known for its incredible design aesthetic. Walking inside, you are instantly greeted by deep emerald and teal walls, warm exposed brick, dark wood pillars, and an unforgettable grand arched back-bar. It’s moody, atmospheric, and full of texture—a photographer’s dream and the ultimate setting for an editorial-style milestone session.

The Palette: Color Theory & Intentional Styling

Great photography begins with intentional styling, and Chasity understood the assignment from head to toe:

  • The Power of the Wardrobe: She wore a rich, magenta-burgundy satin wrap cocktail dress. Satin is a remarkable fabric to shoot in low-light environments because its surface catches subtle directional light, creating natural highlight rolloff along the contours of the body.

  • High-Contrast Complements: Setting a deep red/magenta dress against Luna Tequila’s deep teal walls and chartreuse velvet armchairs creates a classic complementary color dynamic. It immediately makes the subject pop off the background without feeling disjointed.

  • The Golden Accents: Polished gold sunburst drop earrings, layered necklaces, a stack of bangles, and metallic-gold heels caught the warm interior light, adding an opulent finish.

  • The Unexpected Pop: Her canary-yellow manicure provided an energetic, vibrant focal point that contrasted beautifully against the deep jewel tones whenever her hands entered the frame.

Crafting the Light: The Technical Breakdown

Shooting in a moody, dimly lit lounge like Luna Tequila presents a thrilling technical challenge: how do you keep the authentic, intimate atmosphere of the venue while making your subject look crisp, radiant, and flatteringly illuminated?

  1. Balancing Ambient Light with Off-Camera Flash:
If you rely purely on high ISO and ambient bar lighting, skin tones get muddy and shadows lose definition. On the other hand, blasting direct flash completely kills the warm, cozy ambiance of the space. To find the sweet spot, I dragged the shutter slightly (around 1/80s to 1/125s) to allow the warm 2700K tungsten glow of the pendant lamps and backlit bar shelves to burn into the background. Then, I layered in a soft off-camera key light fitted with a portable softbox and a subtle warming grid, feathering it across Chasity. This sculpted her facial features, gave her short blonde curls gorgeous dimension, and produced crisp, lively catchlights in her eyes.

  2. Managing Mixed Color Temperatures & Skin Tones:
With warm tungsten bulbs, amber bottle displays, green-toned wall reflections, and natural daylight filtering through front windows, color balancing required meticulous precision. By setting a custom white balance and using color grading to control individual hue luminance, we preserved her warm, natural skin tones while letting the emeralds, magentas, and amber cocktails shine with rich, clean saturation.

  3. Focal Lengths & Depth of Field Selection:
    • Wide Environmental Storytelling (35mm at f/2.8): For wide-angle compositions like Image #56, a 35mm focal length captured the symmetry of the arched bar and the expansive lounge while keeping distortion to a minimum.
    • Compression & Creamy Bokeh (85mm at f/1.8 – f/2.0): For intimate portraits like Image #39 and #40, an 85mm prime lens compressed the background, transforming the rows of backlit liquor bottles into smooth, golden circles of light that wrapped around her silhouette.

Details & The ToastClose-up detail shot of Chasity holding the amber citrus cocktail in textured glassware with her gold rings, bangles, canary-yellow nails, and the tasting board in view.

Behind the Lens: Props, Movement & Authentic Joy

A successful milestone session should feel more like an experience than a checklist of poses. The goal was to give Chasity room to interact with the environment, relax, and truly celebrate:

  • The Toast: We incorporated signature elements of the venue, including an amber-hued craft cocktail in textured coupe glassware and a custom wooden flight board garnished with fresh orange wheels and spiced salt rims. Macro-style detail shots (Image #61) captured the tactile sensory elements of the day—the condensation on the glass, the sparkle of gold rings, and the warm wood grain.

  • The Celebratory Cigar: Marking 45 with unapologetic attitude, Chasity relaxed on the tan leather sofa with a celebratory cigar (Image #51). Capturing her in motion—laughing mid-conversation and holding the cigar—brought a playful, lavish edge to the gallery that felt completely authentic to her milestone mood.

The Art of Monochrome: Tonal Contrast & Texture

While the color story was central to this session, converting selected frames to black-and-white offered a striking, timeless contrast.

When color is removed, photography becomes entirely about light, shadow, texture, and expression:

  • In portraits like Image #45 and #57, the deep contrast between the plush velvet armchairs, the sheen of the satin wrap dress, and her illuminated platinum curls created rich tonal gradients.

  • By carefully managing the luminance of red and yellow color channels in the black-and-white conversion, her skin tones remained bright and luminous against deep, velvety shadow values, immortalizing raw, candid laughter that transcends time.

Key Takeaways for Planning Your Own Milestone Photo Session

  1. Pick a Venue with Real Personality: You don't have to limit yourself to a studio. A moody cocktail bar, boutique hotel lounge, or historic restaurant provides built-in character, architectural depth, and natural texture.
  2. Dress for the Environment: Plan your wardrobe colors to intentionally complement or contrast the venue's interior palette. Fabrics with subtle luster (like satin or silk) reflect light beautifully in low-light spaces.

  3. Bring Elements That Celebrate You: Whether it’s a signature cocktail toast, favorite accessories, or celebratory props, personal touches make the session feel like an authentic celebration rather than a stiff photoshoot.

A heartfelt congratulations to Chasity on celebrating 45 fabulous years! It was an absolute honor to capture this milestone with you and create portraits that reflect your power, joy, and style.
